Define niche and how it might apply to evolution?

a niche is the role or position a species has in its environment and includes all interactions with living and nonliving elements as an animal meets it survival and reproduction.

it might apply to evolution because most resources are limited and individuals within a species has to must compete with one another for those resources. So it would be survival of the fittest. the ones who win the Competition have a certain variation which is then passed down to their off spring. i hope i helped.Define niche and how it might apply to evolution?
An evolutionary niche is a particular place in the environment that an organism may occupy. Only one organism may occupy a niche at any given time. If two organisms are trying to occupy the same niche, that's where you get competition. It applies to evolution in that competition provides the driving force behind evolution. When two organisms compete for the same niche favored traits may give them greater ability to reproduce and evolve. Think about it this way:

You have two organisms that are competing for one food source (that's the niche). The organism that is more able to collect that food as a result of its morphology will have greater reproductive success. If the food source changes the organism must adapt to that change through a variety of evolutionary mechanisms to either survive, or die out.
